Every Feeling is Important

Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow,” and others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.”
But I say unto you, they are inseparable.
Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.
— Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet

All feelings & emotions are important.

The light ones are only appreciated as long as we also feel the darker ones as well.

Just like in Inside Out, we can have sadness and then happiness all within the same moment. And in that, all of the other nuances of feelings as well. Sometimes we feel anger and then love, sometimes we feel sick and then joyful, it’s all important.

Not only is it important to recognize them, but it is also important to feel them.

From experience, it is always better to express those feelings in healthy ways so that you don’t bottle them up and then explode. And those explosions can happen at any moment and be expressed in any way after a trigger of some sort; for me, it was typically yelling, arguing and crying all at once. Not fun, but the release after and the calm that I typically felt was good. Does it mean that I can keep bottling things up? No. It is still better to feel my feelings in the moments that they are happening & process them healthily so that I can be calmer for longer.

What is the point of promoting joy if you feel all of your emotions, including the “negative” ones?

Well, humble reader, the point is to remind you that there are multiple sides to the coin and that Joy & upset/anger/negative feelings are all there, and you get to feel all of them.

I like to promote joy because it reminds me, and you, that there are brighter sides to life. There is a silver lining in every moment of time, including poor situations, hard times, and our thoughts.

If you were to take away from anything I have said here, it is this:

Joy can be found everywhere, including in your negatives.

Now go forth and find your joy :)
